The Real Heartbreak Story Behind the Creation of Cartier Love Bracelet

sell cartier bracelets

The creation of the iconic Cartier Love bracelet in 1969 paved the way for a new, modern style and the notion of wearing jewellery. People believed that jewellery represents one’s wealth and status. And the unique gold bangle featuring the signature screws around the edge challenged this conventional idea.

The legendary designer Aldo Cipullo designed the Love bangle for regular wear, not for special occasions. Wearers can secure it to their wrist with the help of its miniature screwdriver. However, the Cartier Love bangle remains a mainstay piece among many fashionistas’ jewellery stack even after over 50 years of its creation.

It is one of the world’s most searched jewellery items with an admirable ability to hold resale value. If you sell your Cartier bracelet, you are likely to secure fantastic prices for it.

So most of you are familiar with the Love bracelet and its designer’s name Cipullo. However, there is a lot more to know beyond these. Thus, keep reading to explore the real story behind Aldo Cipullo’s genius.

The Man Behind the Iconic Cartier Love Bracelet

Born in 1935, Aldo Cipullo belonged to a jewellers’ family in Naples. He was raised in Rome and led a stringent life because of his stern authoritarian father. Along with his four younger siblings, he used to go to work every day after school. So the innovative and charming Cipullo became obsessed with escaping from his father’s vigilant eyes.

Eventually, the popularity of actors like James Dean and Marlon Brando and American culture in postwar Italy influenced Aldo Cipullo. One of his dreams was to visit America. Finally, in 1959, he stepped into New York and joined the leading Manhattan jeweller David Webb in 1961.

Gradually, Cipuloo became accustomed and a part of New York’s social life. Later he joined Tiffany & Co. and put forward a rich dynamism to the high jewellery collection of Tiffany.

The Romantic Breakup that Inspired Love Bracelet

Aldo Cipullo’s designed jewellery pieces for Tiffany & Co. exhibited the graphic modernism that secured success later. However, a romantic heartbreak gave him the idea about the Love bangle.

It is said that this breakup made Cipullo very sad, and he craved something that no one could take away from him. He was looking for something that represents a permanent symbol of love. Thus, Aldo Cipullo came up with the Love bangle featuring a simplistic yet functional design intended to hold onto the lost love’s memories.

However, you will be fascinated to know that Tiffany rejected this design and then took it to the elite jeweller Cartier.  Michael Thomas, the brand’s chief executive, accepted Cippulo’s design instantly. And the Love bangle became an instant hit.

From Princess Caroline of Monaco to Sophia Loren to Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, celebrities and notable personalities adopted the symbolic Love bangle. However, Aldo Cipullo continued to make more legendary designs for the brand. Take, for example, the nail bracelet.

He took inspiration from the hardware theme and designed the nail bracelet. Moreover, his design list for Cartier also includes the hinged Hand of the Heart pendant resulting from the ancient Hamsa symbol.

The director of the style, heritage and image at Cartier International, Pierre Rainero, says that Aldo Cipullo’s acclaimed contribution is significantly responsible for what is Cartier today. So it is not possible to imagine Cartier today without his creations. Cipullo’s expertise and the brand’s innate nature contributed to the exceeding success of the Love bracelet.
